The ultimate goal of the project, “Enhancing the Participation of Community-based Organizations (CBOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Democratic Governance in Bangladesh”, funded by the European Union and being implemented by Oxfam in Bangladesh and Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), is to ensure that the development in Bangladesh is inclusive and sustainable which will be achieved through a democratic practice of social accountability through the local authorities (LA) and local government (LG) representatives and enhanced participation of the Community-based Organizations (CBOs) and the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).

বাংলাদেশসহ পৃথিবীর ১৯৩টি দেশ অর্থনৈতিক প্রবৃদ্ধি, অন্তর্ভূক্তিমূলক সমাজ ব্যবস্থা এবং পরিবেশ-বান্ধব উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে কাজ করার জন্য প্রতিজ্ঞাবদ্ধ হয়েছে। ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে ১৭টি অভীষ্ট এবং ১৬৯টি লক্ষ্য বাস্তবায়নের উদ্দেশ্যকে সামনে রেখে যে বৈশ্বিক উন্নয়ন পরিকল্পনা, এজেন্ডা ২০৩০’ গৃহীত হয়েছিল তা অর্জনের জন্য বাংলাদেশ কাজ করে চলেছে।

A total of 193 countries including Bangladesh have accepted this development agenda. The countries have pledged to ensure an inclusive society along with a sustainable and participatory development by the end of the given timeframe. There are a total of 169 targets under 17 goals in the agenda to attain the desired outcome of an inclusive and sustainable development. To ensure the benefits of the growth enjoyed by all, the SDGs needs to be localized; i.e. participation of grassroots needs to be ensured.

The decision making process being highly centralized, it is hard to gather the demands of the people from the grassroots. Through the attempt of achieving the 2030 agenda, participation of all can be ensured. Thus, incorporating the grassroots issues to the national policies to achieve a global agenda.

For this, the local CBOs and CSOs need to build their own capacity on the understanding of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the development process. Only then they can help the people at grassroots to advocate for their own needs. The advocacy can be done to the LA and LG representatives. The LA and LG representatives will then forward the demand of the grassroots to the central policymakers.
